FSW Heat Sink
  • Heat sinks will be joined together using Friction Stir Welding (FSW).
  • Maximum final size for a FSW heat sink is 400x190 (mm).
  • Standard lead time is 1-2weeks. No MOQ.
  • Additional modifications including holes, notches, and pedestals are possible.

If a FSW heat sink larger than the maximum size or using a different fin pattern is required, please contact our sales.

Production Method - Friction Stir Welding (FSW)

Friction Stir Welding is a method of joining materials by heating the surrounding material to a high temperature through friction with a rotating tool. This causes the material to soften and flow, joining the materials. Compared to other joining methods, it has the advantage of high energy efficiency and a stable joint quality.
At right is a photo of a cross-section, cut perpendicular to the weld line/joint. There are no visible voids or cavities.

FSW heat sinks will have a conical hole remaining along the edge (right photo). This feature is a FSW process requirement and should not be significant thermally or mechanically.

Performance Impact of Joint

The following are results of a performance test, comparing a standard 100x100x30mm heat sink (UB100-30B) with a heat sink created by joining two smaller units by FSW to the same size. Thermal performance is virtually identical.
